Did a search on the server drives for Oracle.DataAccess.EXE ...did not find it although in the client install I do have Oracle.DataAccess.dll . Is there a download I need to get from Oracle in order to get the .exe?

I found two versions of the Oracle.DataAccess.dll on my hosting machine so I tried copying each one in turn into the bin folder on my site and loading the site. Each resulted in the same error loading the assembly as I described above.

So I tried copying the version of the Oracle.DataAccess.dll from the development client where I am running Visual Studio into the bin folder for the website on the hosting machine. The website loads OK, but when we get to the bit of code where I am actually using DataAccess run into an exception...

So am I right in thinking that there is something wrong with the oracle install on the hosting server? But why does the gridview access work no problem? Should I try re-installing the oracle 10g client on the hosting machine or or is there something else I have to download from oracle?

After you download tools and install these on affected machine running culprit application we will need to setup Verifier rules. By activating Application Verifier, stack trace information is saved each time the process opens a handle, closes a handle, or references an invalid handle.

You need symbols in order to be able to do effective debugging. Symbol files could be in an older COFF format or the PDB format. PDBs are program database files and contain public symbols. These debuggers allow you to mention a list of URIs where they would look for symbols for loaded binaries.

First lets download and install DebugDiag diagnostic tool on affected machine. It can be downloaded here. DebugDiag is very useful tool that you should be well aware of. It is designed to assist in troubleshooting issues such as hangs, slow performance, memory leaks or fragmentation, and crashes in any user-mode process. If you really want to find out more about different uses of DebugDiag and see how you can script\customize memory dump collection via that tool , see DebugDiag MSDN blog.

Next tool you will need is AppVerifier. Application Verifier assists developers in quickly finding subtle programming errors that can be extremely difficult to identify with normal application testing. Using Application Verifier in Visual Studio makes it easier to create reliable applications by identifying errors caused by heap corruption, incorrect handle and critical section usage. If you are using unmanaged code (VC++) you should use this tool in your testing. You can get more information on the tool on MSDN. You can get tool here. Again you will download and install that tool on affected machine. 2ff7e9595c
